The report details how Joseph Patterson, 27, was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery of an infant Friday morning before authorities received news that the 2-year-old young boy had died from his injuries in a South Dakota hospital, but before that, he had abused a young child and abused a woman.
His bond is set at $750,000 cash and South Dakota State's Attorney Thomas Wollman asked for suspended sentences related to misdemeanor charges against Patterson for a simple assault domestic charge and violation of domestic abuse bond to be revoked.
Judge Stuart Tiede set a revocation hearing for October 30th. Patterson was indicted in June 2012 on several counts of simple assault involving an ex-girlfriend and her 3-year-old son, according to the Argus Leader. Patterson was later charged for violating a no-contact order. He was sentenced to a year in jail for both cases but that time was suspended on the condition he attend domestic violence counseling.
The victim in that case requested a protection order against Patterson. In the protection order, the woman said that Patterson had spanked her 3-year-old son so hard for misbehaving in church that he needed some ice for welts on his butttocks. Patterson then made the children, present in the house, go to their rooms and pulled down the shades in the home, grabbed the woman by her throat and waved his first in her face.
According to the woman, Patterson has threaten to kill her multiple times.
